Default Tiger Airways at Melbourne Airport

Herald Sun reports that passengers on new budget airline Tiger Airways should expect a basic service when flights start from a no-frills terminal at Melbourne airport this year. Airport spokeswoman Brooke Lord said yesterday the building was separate from the main terminals and would feel more like a railway station.

This sounds like Singapore budget terminal, except for railway station bit. Tiger Airways is the main tenant at the Singapore BT and I'm sure that this basic services model has proven successful there. There are no airbridges, but the aircraft can pull up right to the terminal and passengers just walk from the plane to the terminal. All the other facilities at Singapore BT are excellent: duty free, restaurants, currency exchange, free internet.

My point is that a budget terminal is not a new concept and it can be a pleasant travel experience.

If you want lowest prices you sacrifice some conveniences. The Budget terminal in Singapore is quite nice actually. If Tiger Airways is taking part in building the one in Melbourne it will be well planned and have everything a traveler needs.

Is Tiger planning to fly to Singapore from Melbourne, or just domestic? I'm hoping to find a cheap way of getting to India in January '08 and thought Tiger might do the job. Any clues?

Tiger Airways Australia will be generally a domestic airline, but I would expect that if they establish a hub at Melbourne airport it will also be used for flights to the main Tiger Airways international hub in Singapore.

Tiger Airways already flies to Perth and Darwin from Singapore.
