AirAsia launched direct flights from Indonesia to Singapore today. The celebration to mark its inaugural flight from Pekanbaru, Indonesia was held at Terminal 1, Departure Transit Lounge, Changi International Airport. The event was launched by Mr. Yam Kum Weng, Senior Director – Air Hub Development Group and Captain Dharmadi, Chief Executive officer, Indonesia AirAsia and was witnessed by Dato’ Sri Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia, Swissport Managing Director, Marc Antoine chariatte, Chooi Yee Choong, Regional Director Singapore Tourism Board – ASEAN and Hassan Kasssim, Manager, Singapore Tourism Board – North Sumatra, Indonesia.

At a press conference in Singapore to announce the inaugural flight, Captain Dharmadi, Chief Executive officer, Indonesia AirAsia said “AirAsia now serves 3 international destinations from Indonesia; Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching), Thailand (Bangkok) and Singapore in addition to eight Indonesian domestic routes from Jakarta. We are proud of the inclusion of this first direct flight from Indonesia as travelers can now benefit from AirAsia’s revolutionary low fare to connect to over 106 routes which AirAsia currently serve in addition to the international destinations serviced by AirAsia X. Thus, this latest service will not only complement AirAsia’s aggressive growth in Indonesia, but is also a way of supporting the Visit Indonesia Year 2008 by feeding more traffic to the country. The new sector will also enable greater access to a whole new market of cost-conscious travelers from Singapore and Pekanbaru as both are established gateways. In addition to that, we believe both countries will enjoy mutual benefits of feeding the traffic between both hubs,”

“We have known to offer our guests with the best products and services; from our revolutionary low fares, leather seats, an array of hot meals to choose from, high quality service, fun and friendly cabin crew and has also introduced AirAsia On Time Guarantee. It is also much easier and convenient to travel with us as bookings are made available through online and via mobile. With all these, AirAsia is indeed providing 5-star value to its guests.” concluded Captain Dharmadi

Currently, there are four direct flights per week servicing Kuala Lumpur – Pekanbaru thus collectively the inclusion of this new service to Singapore brings the number to seven flights per week. It is also noteworthy to highlight that for greater accessibility and comfort, AirAsia flies to and from Terminal 1 of Changi International Airport, Singapore.

Pekanbaru, located along the Siak River on the Sumatra Island is the capital city of Riau province, Indonesia. Tourist attractions in Pekan Baru are the Great Mosque of An-Nur, Alam Mayang Fishing Garden, Sang Nila Utama Museum, Riau Cultural Park, Princess Kaca Mayang Garden, and Sari Valley Artificial Lake. For all those who love ceramics can spend plenty time in the old market called Pasar Bawah in the city.
