AirAsia has been granted rights to operate two daily flights from 1 February 2008 onwards, which will see AirAsia’s perseverance for the past six years come to fruition with its low fares leading the way to liberalization of air travel.

Today will go down in history as the day that AirAsia declares People’s Day with the commencement of its inaugural flight into Singapore from Kuala Lumpur. The liberalization of the route will see consumers have the freedom of choice and benefit of competition, with AirAsia serving the best interests of the people with its low fares.

The airline’s maiden voyage made it way across the Johor Straits with AirAsia entourage onboard and touched down in anticipation by many who attended the welcome reception ceremony held at the Terminal 1, Changi International Airport. Dato’ Tony Fernandes, together with AirAsia guests and media arrived on flight AK123 and was received by Mr. Foo Sek Min, Director of Airport Management of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The brand new Airbus A320 landed at 10.55am carrying 180 guests onboard.

Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia, said, “This is a historic day for Asian aviation. I believe it’s a start of mass liberalization and the end of the journey of high fares. This is the victory for the common man and that’s why we, at AirAsia has named it People’s Day. From our little dreams six years ago, it still feels like a dream that we have finally achieved nirvana by starting Kuala Lumpur-Singapore.”

“All 5,000 AirAsians have worked tirelessly to enable 50 million people to travel on low fares and has transformed the very fabric of the ASEAN society. And today, it is another step forward for democratization of air travel in Asia and for that, the Board of Directors at AirAsia has decided to give half a day off to our wonderful workers at AirAsia. It is the City Day (Federal Territory Day) today at Kuala Lumpur and for the people of AirAsia, it’s People’s Day. 1st February 2008 will be dearly marked in our memories forever.”
“We would like to thank our Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Transport and Minister of Finance for their endless efforts in allowing AirAsia to grow from a 2-aircraft airline to one of the largest airlines in Asia.”

On 10 January 2008, AirAsia announced the opening of the sale of the route by giving away 30,000 free seats and with fares starting from RM29.99/SGD$13.99. Consumers can be rest assured that this will be one of the many exciting campaigns offered by the airline who is well known for its signature low fares.
All fares quoted are excluding airport taxes, surcharges and fees, and are applicable for one way travel only.
