I am trying to figure out if there are any major hidden catches for discount airlines in Europe. I want to travel from Berlin to Lisbon this summer, and flying is so much quicker. Right now it looks like it only costs about 40 euro, on EasyJet. Has anyone taken these flights? It appears that you can take up to about 43 lbs (20 kilo) of luggage without additional charges. The price seems too good to be true! Do you know how far in advance you have to purchase these tickets to get a good deal?

There is no catch. Its really true those prices. I love the budget airlines and use Easyjet often for weekend trips to London.

You only must not exceed your luggage otherwise they charge you for overweight, thats about it. The airplanes are good, crew is nice.

The only thing is the more in advance you book your tickets the cheaper the price is. If you book "late" the lowest fares might be gone and you will get a higher price.

Ow and in the air itself if you want drinks or snacks you will have to buy it, its not free, thats about it.

While easyJet has a limit of 20 kg (44 lbs) for hold lugagge and charge for extra weight, you can take as much as you can reasonably carry into the cabin and store in the overhead locker. Just watch out for carry-on regulations in force in Europe - no liquid container larger than 100 ml, to be placed in a transparent ziplock bag, which should be taken out of your cabin bag and screened separately at security.
They also strictly finish check-in 40 minutes before the original departure time, even if the flight is delayed. If you miss your flight, you normally have to pay extra (the difference between the fare paid and the current fare) for the next or alternative flight. But their fleet is nearly new and operation is professional.
