I have two RT's on Air Asia in the next month. I understand their baggage allowances are quite restrictive. They allow one checked bag at 15KG and one carry-on at 7KG. The rates for additional KGs are quite high. I have two questions:

1. Will they weigh both my carry on and my checked bag, or just the checked bag as most airlines do? I'm thinking I could always transfer any extra weight from my checked bag to my carryon (as long as they don't weight the carry-on).

2. If I am a KG or two over, will they look the other way, or are they inclined to follow the weight rules rigidly?

Please understand that I am not trying to carry a huge amount of weight, but as it stands today, I'll probably be 3-5 kgs over until I get rid of some of the books I'm bringing to read.

The excess baggage charges vary depending on where you are traveling to/from. For flights within Thailand they only charge 80 baht per kilo.

It seems a bit naughty to take advantage of Air Asia bargain fares and then want to exceed their checked baggage allowance by a 'huge' 20% - 33% for free. Last I heard their excess charges were very low about 100 baht a kilo and not always charged. Lugging heavy books around is expensive and best avoided.

I think it just depends...last month they weighed only my checked bag from Bangkok to Hanoi. Out of Hanoi as I went around the corner toward the gate after checking my bag in there was a man with a scale and he was weighing carry-ons. Also, at the check-in counter the guy in front of me was just a couple of kilos over on his checked bag and he was frantically putting on all the clothes he could and transferring whatever he could to his carry-on so apparently they aren't too lenient about overage.

air asia does not weight the carry on. I have even taken a carry on bag plus a small backpack and they have not said anything. They are strict on the weights of checked in baggage and will not allow you to buy an extra ticket to increase your baggage allottment...too bad. Between Bkk and Phuket, use NOK Air and buy their Nok Plus for a few dollars more....gives you increased luggage.
