Luckily for you there is a low season on all major airlines from middle to last week in January to about mid February.
Thai airlines low season starts later than Singapore airlines. Check out their prices.

You can use low cost carriers and hop from Bangkok to Singapore and then fly Tiger to Darwin and then fly Virgin to Melbourne. ( they are having special deals not but end of January coincides with school hols here.)

You will need to check connecting flights and work out whether it is worth the time factor versus convenience and the additional expense which may not be so great at low season. Tiger is not user friendly with its connections to Melbourne but you may prefer to spend a day or so in Darwin. I would prefer to fly direct on a low season ticket with major carrier.

Jetstar - the long-distance Australian Jetstar - is now flying A330s three times a week  from Bangkok to Melbourne, and also Phuket to Sydney. The fare is apparently about 11000 baht one way including "tax" for the date I checked.
