The advent of budget airlines has expanded a form of travel where you go, not to the destination of your dreams, but to the one with the lowest fare.  This has always been true, but has become even more common, especially for weekend getaways.   I was talking to someonw recently who is going to Krakow for a weekend.  Why?  One of the budget airlines had a sale.  I think the couple knows something about Krakow, but I doubt that was taken into consideration.  What better reason is there?

It's also nice when you spend a lot of money to travel a long distance to be able explore further with cheap local flights. For example if you fly from London to Singapore you now have a choice of visiting Thailand and Vietnam and Philippines for only a few dollars extra.

I tend to be a more intense traveler, wanting to spend my time in one place and work my way along overland.  But now that I've done so many of the overland trips, I'm happy to fly a lot of routes.  And I'm getting older quickly, which makes a difference.

As you pointed out, for people who like a lot of variety in a relatively short space of time, the budget airlines have made a huge difference.
