Virgin America filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) seeking authority to fly from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico (SJD). If approved, this would become the airline's first international destination. The route is under review with the DOT following the February 4, 2008, announcement that Frontier Airlines would stop serving the market in April 2008. Under the U.S.-Mexico bilateral aviation agreements, the DOT will now select another airline to serve this popular West Coast tourism destination in Frontier's place.
"We saw that the DOT had Cabo rights under review, and we simply could not pass up the opportunity," said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush. "Since it was a low-cost airline that is giving up the right to fly to Cabo, we think it would be ideal for another low-cost carrier to take its place. If Virgin America is awarded this route, travelers would have a new high-quality, low-fare option for travel to the beautiful San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas resorts."
Launched in August 2007, Virgin America flies to San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, San Diego and Seattle (starting March 18, 2008). In addition to these non-stop markets, Virgin America also offers convenient connecting flights from Las Vegas, San Diego and Seattle (starting March 18, 2008) to New York and Washington.
