Malta Star reports that Spanish low-cost airline Vueling will commence its operations in Malta from 31 March 2008, offering three flights a week to and from the Spanish capital city, Madrid.

Together with Ryanair and Click Air, Vueling will cater the lucrative Spanish market fuelled by language students, especially in the summer months.

Madrid was a destination previously serviced by Air Malta, however the Maltese airline dropped this destination, even though Madrid still features on the airline's destination list on its website.

Vueling sales director Juan Carlos Iglesias said that with flights starting from 40 euros one-way, at a frequency of three times a week, the company expects a good demand for the Madrid route.

The Spanish low-cost airline said it expects to carry 45,000 passengers in the first year of operations and booking is already open from the airline's website.

Also starting its operations in April, low-cost airline Norwegian Air Shuttle shall commence its twice-a-week operation from Oslo.
