European LCCs to include payment fees in ticket prices

July 7, 2012 By Budget Airline News

Due to consumer lobbying, European low-cost airlines have conceded to include the cost of paying by debit card in the stated price of tickets. Until now, the fee for paying by debit or credit card has been added to the airfare as an extra service, like seat selection or on-board meals, even though many airlines do not offer an alternative means of payment.

The change comes after investigations by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). It has been estimated that these payment fees cost travelers an additional £300 million per year in addition to the stated ticket price. Airlines like RyanAir charge fees as high as £6 per person to pay by debit or credit card.

By December 2012, airlines must include payment fees in the advertised airfares. Low-cost airlines that have agreed to this change include Ryanair, EasyJet, BMI Baby, Flybe, German Wings, Jet2, and Wizz Air.

Flybe to expand services from East Midlands and Birmingham

May 8, 2012 By Budget Airline News

Low-cost carrier Flybe has announced it will be expanding its services from East Midlands and Birmingham airports in the UK. This comes just days after news that BmiBaby will be reducing the frequency of these routes and eventually ceasing all operations later this year.

Flybe will be doubling its weekday flights to from Birmingham to Belfast City Airport to four a day. The airline also plans to operate additional flights from East Midlands to Amsterdam, Paris, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Jersey in the coming months.

In the press release, Flybe managing director Andrew Strong stated:

“We have been surprised at bmibaby’s decision to close some of its routes within just six weeks time and as a result we are doing everything we can to work with our airport partners in ensuring that those passengers wanting to travel from East Midlands Airport are not left stranded.

“We realise that many passengers rely on East Midlands for their regional and European travel. We are therefore pleased that we can offer them continuity of service with increased weekday frequency on our Belfast City service and that our flexible special offer over the next few days will facilitate urgent bookings to take place with due peace of mind.”

“Flybe has long had a desire to bring to the East Midlands the specialist long term and stable regional air services that we have brought to virtually every major UK regional airport over the last 25 years. We are confident that the measures we have taken today should ensure that passengers experience little or no service disruption on what are crucially important links for the East Midlands economy.”

Flybe drops its £9 debit card fee

April 27, 2012 By Budget Airline News

British budget airline Flybe has dropped its £9 flat fee for passengers paying for by debit card for flights booked online. This change comes just at Britain’s Office of Fair Trading is considering action against airlines that pass on the debit card transaction fees to the consumer.

In a statement, Flybe said it has removed the debit fee as “”a fair, open and transparent approach to sales and service policies”.

Most budget airlines currently charge a transaction fee per flight leg, per passenger. Flybe’s decision to drop this fee may lead to other budget airlines like Ryanair or EasyJet having to drop theirs too in order to remain competitive.

Two new non-stop Flybe services will operate to the West Country: daily services between Norwich and Exeter will start on Sunday 25 March and a brand new summer service to Newquay will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 5 May and 22 September. Both flights take just 75 minutes and offer huge time savings versus a five- or six-hour journey by road or rail. The Norwich-based 31-seat fast Dornier 328 turboprop aircraft operated by Loganair will provide an increased schedule of Flybe flights to Manchester.  From Monday 5 March, there will be three return flights on the route every weekday with prices starting from £49.99 one-way including all taxes.   The new timetable will provide an enhanced choice of flight timings, starting and finishing the working day in Norwich and will improve the range of connections available via Manchester to destinations throughout the UK and worldwide.

Loganair’s Chief Operating Officer, Jonathan Hinkles, said:  “We are delighted to be bringing our successful formula to Norwich of frequent flights, easy connections and a range of fares to suit both business and leisure travellers.  The introduction of the 31-seat Dornier 328 aircraft will enable us to provide more Flybe flights to Manchester and to restore links between Norwich and the West Country. Both will save customers from arduous road or rail journeys and we believe will prove hugely popular throughout the year. Improved air links and creation of new jobs in the city is great news for Norwich.”

Andrew Strong, the managing director of Flybe UK, commented: “We are launching our new twice-weekly summer route to Newquay as a result of passenger demand.
