European LCCs to include payment fees in ticket prices

July 7, 2012 By Budget Airline News

Due to consumer lobbying, European low-cost airlines have conceded to include the cost of paying by debit card in the stated price of tickets. Until now, the fee for paying by debit or credit card has been added to the airfare as an extra service, like seat selection or on-board meals, even though many airlines do not offer an alternative means of payment.

The change comes after investigations by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). It has been estimated that these payment fees cost travelers an additional £300 million per year in addition to the stated ticket price. Airlines like RyanAir charge fees as high as £6 per person to pay by debit or credit card.

By December 2012, airlines must include payment fees in the advertised airfares. Low-cost airlines that have agreed to this change include Ryanair, EasyJet, BMI Baby, Flybe, German Wings, Jet2, and Wizz Air.

Ryanair cuts Morocco routes

July 1, 2012 By Budget Airline News

Budget airline Ryanair has announced it will be terminating certain routes to Morocco and reducing the frequency of others with effect from October 1, 2012. The changes are due to increased airport fees in Morocco which will make these routes less profitable.

In total, 34 Ryanair flights per week will be cut. The London(Stansted)-Fez and Valencia-Marrakech routes will be terminated, and flights from London(Luton)-Marrakech will be reduced to 2 flights per week.

The official Ryanair statement read: “ONDA, the Moroccan Government’s airports authority, has reneged on its agreement with the airline by imposing a new monopoly handling company on Ryanair which would have resulted in a massive increase in charges for the airline”.

Ryanair makes bid for rival Aer Lingus

June 20, 2012 By Budget Airline News

Budget airline Ryanair has revealed it is planning to make a €694-million bid to takeover airline Aer Lingus. Ryanair previously tried to takeover this rival airline in 2007, but the deal was prohibited by the European Council.

A Ryanair statement read: “Ryanair believes that any competition concerns which the European Commission may have can be addressed by Ryanair making appropriate remedies prior to the completion of this offer and by significant synergies and cost efficiencies resulting from this combination.”

Ryanair currently owns a 29.8% stake in Aer Lingus, which is the flag carrier of Ireland. There is speculation that the government of Ireland will be eager to sell their 25% stake in the company, allowing Ryanair to takeover.

If Ryanair succeeds and absorbs Aer Lingus, it would control about 80% of the Irish market share for air travel.
