AirAsia X terminates routes to London, Paris, India

January 12, 2012 By Budget Airline News

AirAsia X, the long-haul division of AirAsia, has officially announced it is terminating routes from Kuala Lumpur to London, Paris, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

The airline will suspend its four weekly flights to Mumbai from January 31, daily flights to New Delhi from March 22, six weekly flights to London from March 31 and four weekly flights to Paris from March 30.

“The continued high jet fuel prices and the weakening demand for air travel from Europe, brought about by the current economic situation together with exorbitant government taxes, have placed cost pressures on operating long-haul low cost flights between Asia and Europe, compromising our ability to offer the low fares AirAsia X is known for.” AirAsia X Chief Executive Azran Osman-Rani said in a statement.

“As for Delhi and Mumbai, the continued visa restrictions for travel between India and Malaysia, and the increase in airport and handling charges have resulted in a structure not conducive to the low cost model.”

AirAsia will send all customers with bookings after the cancellation dates an email outlining their options which include a full refund, a reroute to another AirAsia X destination, or a ticket on an alternative carrier where available.

Manila’s Clark Airport to get new budget terminal

January 5, 2012 By Budget Airline News

The Philippines government has revealed plans to build a new budget terminal this year at Clark International Airport in order to cope with demand.

According to local newspaper reports, the new budget terminal which will be located at the Clark Freeport in Pampanga will take three years to complete and will be able to handle 10 million passengers a year when it is finished.

Victor Luciano, president of Clark International Airport Corporation, which operates Diosdado Macapagal International Airport, said: “At present, our terminal capacity is very limited. Our current passenger terminal is being expanded to serve 2.5 million passengers a year.”

The new budget terminal, will be a separate project from the planned overall development of Clark as a premiere international gateway, and may be included in the government’s list of public-private partnership (PPP) projects.

Meanwhile, the current expansion of Diosdado Macapagal International Airport is due to be completed in 2013, and is expected to cost around $8.2 million.

By the end of this year, the gateway is forecast to handle around 750,000 passengers, however Luciano said that the number should hit one million by the end of 2013.

He said: “AirAsia alone is expecting to have five million passengers out of Clark in the next four years.”

Other airlines that fly out of Clark are local carriers Cebu Pacific, Southeast Asian Airlines (SEAir) and AirPhil Express; South Korean companies’ Jin Air and Asiana Airlines, and Singapore’s Tiger Airways.

Cebu Pacific considers long-haul, low-cost expansion

January 4, 2012 By Budget Airline News

Philippine low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific will consider starting long-haul, low-cost services if it sees strong demand for certain point-to-point routes.

“We are looking at the opportunity,” Cebu Pacific president and CEO Lance Gokongwei told Flightglobal Pro’s sister publication, Airline Business, in an interview.

“There are certain point-to-point markets we would have to look at. The Middle East has 2.5 million Filipinas; the USA has four million Filipinas. These are quite underserved.”Gokongwei said the airline will go ahead only if it can achieve a sustainable unit-cost advantage and potentially make money for its shareholders.

“I need to be personally convinced that there is a market, and I think there is a market only if you are very selective about which routes you go into with this,” said Gokongwei. “Once we feel that we have the capability to do so, we will.”

The airline, which operates Airbus A320-family aircraft and ATR 72-500s, has orders for the A321neo. It has not ordered any widebodies, which will be needed for long-haul operations, but Gokongwei said there have been discussions about widebodies.

“As part of our business plan, we need to know the operating cost of all aircraft. So we’ve had discussions about widebodies with all the major suppliers,” Gokongwei said.

If the company goes ahead, the long-haul low-cost operation is likely to have a separate management team. This would be similar to Singapore Airlines’ subsidiary, Scoot, and AirAsia X, an associate of Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia.

“It is difficult to do because whenever you bring in new aircraft, it adds complexity. You need management and technical capability, the distribution channels are important,” Gokongwei said.

“It can enhance the brand, just like what AirAsia X has done for AirAsia, but it adds complexity. So if you want to do it, you need to make sure you have completely different teams. Don’t confuse the management by having them do both,” Gokongwei added.
