Tiger Airways Australia is a budget airline based in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 2007 as the Australian subsidiary of Singapore-based Tiger Airways.

The focus of Tiger Airways Australia is the domestic market. At its peak, it operated scheduled flights to 17 destinations in Australia. However, many of these were ended after Tiger Airways Australia was temporarily grounded by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority in July 2011.

As of November 2011, Tiger Airways Australia is only operating scheduled flights to 5 major cities within Australia.

The Tiger Airways Australia fleet comprises of Airbus A320 aircraft.

Scoot and Tigerair to Join KrisFlyer Frequent Flyer Program

Tigerair to start Singapore – Maldives flights in January

Starting from 24 January 2014, Tigerair will operate four weekly flights between Singapore and Male Airport, main international airport in the Maldives.

Tigerair will be the only budget airline offering direct Singapore – Maldives flights. AirAsia X also recently announced flights to Maldives from Kuala Lumpur.

“If you haven’t visited Maldives, you really owe it to yourself to make that trip because you will love the place,” said Mr Alexander Knigge, Chief Commercial Officer at Tigerair, “It is a perfect holiday destination regardless of whether you are taking a honeymoon, a family vacation or treating yourself to a much needed break from your busy life. We are very excited to be the first and only no-frills airline to fly to Maldives from Singapore.”

Virgin Australia buys 60% stake in Tiger Airways

Virgin Australia airline has purchased a 60% stake in low-cost carrier Tiger Airways.  The deal is said to be worth $35 million AUD.

The deal will allow Tiger Airways to expand its fleet and presence in Australia, where it was temporarily grounded in 2011 over safety concerns.

Commenting on the deal, Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti said: “By partnering with Tiger Airways, we can use our expertise to leverage Tiger Australia’s competitive cost base and build a sustainable budget carrier.  While Virgin is taking a significant stake, Tiger will continue to operate under the Tiger Airways brand.”

Tiger Airways returns to Mackay in December 2012

Tiger Airways has announced it will resume service to Mackay, Australia starting December 18, 2012.

The low-cost airline will fly up to four round-trip flights between Melbourne and Mackay each week. One-way fares start from $109.95 AUD.

Tiger Airways previously flew from its base at Melbourne Tullamarine to Mackay, but suspended the route in August 2011. It is the only airline offering direct flights on this route.

Mandala Airlines adds 2 domestic routes, 2 international routes

Indonesian low-cost carrier Mandala Airlines will begin four new routes from December 1, 2012, including two new domestic routes and two new international routes.

The new domestic routes are Denpasar – Surabaya and Jakarta – Padang.

The new international routes are Denpasar – Singapore and Padang – Singapore.

Mandala Airlines will offer daily flights for each of the new routes. Tickets are available through their website.

Mandala Airlines is partly owned by low-cost airline Tiger Airways.

Mandala Airlines launches Jakarta – Bangkok flights

Mandala Airlines officially launched its newest international route from Jakarta to Bangkok, Thailand on August 10, 2012.

Mandala Airlines, now a partner of Tiger Airways, will offer daily flights on this new route.  Mandala Airlines will compete with other low-cost airlines like AirAsia that also fly this route.

One-way fares from Jakarta to Bangkok start from IDR549,900 ($58 USD).

Tiger Airways will fly to Hyderabad and Phnom Penh

Tiger Airways has announced two new routes from their base in Singapore.  The budget airline will fly to Hyderabad, India, starting on September 27 and to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, starting October 1, 2012.

The initial schedule for the Singapore – Hyderabad route will be 5 flights per week on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. One-way fares start from $190 SGD including taxes and surcharges.

The initial schedule for the Singapore – Phnom Penh route will be one flight per day. One-way fares start from $78 SGD including taxes and surcharges.

With these new routes, the Tiger Airways network now covers 43 destinations in Asia and Australia.

Tiger Airways to own 40% of SEAir

Tiger Airways is negotiating a deal to acquire 40% of Southeast Asian Airlines (SEAir). SEAir is a small airline headquartered in Manila, Philippines.

Tiger Airways was already an investor in SEAir, but now seeks to increase its holding to 40% through acquisitions from foreign shareholders. Over time, SEAir will adopt Tiger’s business model and offer low-cost fares to domestic and international destinations within a 5 hour flights from the Philippines.

In a statement, Tiger CEO Chin Yau Seng said: “We are pleased to welcome a new Cub to our family and look forward to nurturing its growth with our Filipino business partners. The investment in SEAir is in-line with our strategy to develop the business into a pan-Asian one, one that will enable us to leverage on the strength of our Singapore base and scale up the size of our business across the region.”

Tiger Airways seems enormous growth potential for the air travel in the Philippines, a country of 90 million people, and is anticipated to announce new SEAir routes in the near future.

Tiger Airways launches flights to Sri Lanka

Tiger Airways’ newest destination from Singapore’s Changi airport is Colombo, Sri Lanka. Direct Singapore – Colombo flights launched on May 31, 2012, and one-way fares start from $98 SGD.

The budget airline will initially offer 3 round-trip flights per week using an A320 aircraft. Flights will be available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

In a statement, Tiger Airways’ commercial director Dave Perring said: “Singapore is now a hop away for Sri Lankans wanting to explore the sights and sounds of the garden city. Likewise, the rich history and natural beauty of Sri Lanka is within easy reach.”
